This major consists of 81 semester credits. An innovative 2+2 program is available through a partnership between Upper Iowa University and Hawkeye Community College. An associate of science degree is earned from HCC and a bachelor of science degree with a major in industrial technology is earned from Upper Iowa University. In addition to the major requirements, the professional education core must be completed.

Professional Education Core Requirements
Candidates for an initial teaching license must complete a major in Birth-Grade 3: Inclusive Settings, a major in Elementary Education, a major in Instructional Strategist II: Behavior Disorders/ Learning Disabilities/Intellectual Disabilities, or a major in a secondary teaching subject area. Candidates must complete the approved professional education core courses. Program Student Learning Outcomes - Considers Contextual Factors: The teacher uses information about the learning-teaching context and student individual differences to set learning outcomes and plan instruction and assessment.
- Identifies Learning Outcomes: The teacher sets significant, challenging, varied, and appropriate learning outcomes.
- Establishes Assessment Plan: The teacher uses multiple assessment modes and approaches aligned with learning outcomes to assess student learning before, during, and after instruction.
- Creates Design for Instruction: The teacher designs instruction for specific learning outcomes, student characteristics and needs, and learning contexts
- Makes Instructional Decisions: The teacher uses ongoing analysis of student learning to make instructional decisions.
- Analyzes Student Learning: The teacher uses assessment data to profile student learning and communicate information about student progress and achievement.
- Reflects and Evaluates Professional Practices: The teacher analyzes the relationship between his or her instruction and student learning to improve teaching practice.
