The major in exercise science is designed for students who want to prepare for a career related to physical activity. The core classes give students a solid foundation in exercise science, while the emphases allow students to focus on an area of interest.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of exercise sciences including kinesiology and biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise assessment and prescription, motor learning, and nutrition.
- Students will be able to conduct and interpret assessment of health and physical fitness.
- Students will be able to prescribe and implement exercise programs for a variety of populations.
- Students will be able to communicate effectively using modes applicable to exercise and health professionals.
- Students will be able to demonstrate professional and ethical behaviors appropriate for exercise and health professionals.

Performance Enhancement Emphasis
The focus of this emphasis is to prepare students to work within the fitness and health industry with a variety of client populations including professional athletes, middle-age individuals trying to get back into shape, and geriatric adults trying to extend their quality of life. Students will learn strategies to assist clients with improving performance on the field or in activity, increasing physical fitness levels, maintaining ideal body weight and composition, and developing behaviors to prevent disease and promote a healthy lifestyle. Pre-Health Professions Emphasis
The focus of this emphasis is to prepare students for application to graduate programs in athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, physician’s assistant and medical school. Students should work with their academic advisor to determine which specific coursework would be appropriate for the various graduate programs. |
